The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a driving distance of approximately thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the town that grew up round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading instigators were ultimately hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline during the 1980's, because a high percentage of its industry closed down, even so it remains a successful and blooming town today, mostly because of its proximity to the city of london, and the first class rail and road links.

Chelmsford stands just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
