Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, roughly thirty two mls from central London. The town has a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the community that expanded surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless supposed witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a vital manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during WWII, and it was struck a few times.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline in the 1980's, when much of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, largely due to the nearness to the capital, and the superb rail and road links.

Chelmsford is located adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is about sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
