The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of about 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in about the 1st century AD, and the commune which grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main culprits were consequently hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing goods such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline during the 1980's, when a lot of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, but it is still a flourishing and developing town today, primarily due to the closeness to the capital, and the excellent rail and road links.
