Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the Chelmer and Can rivers, about 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a populace of approximately 110,000 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.
