Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, roughly 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of about 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the encampment which grew up around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the occupants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, making such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit several times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline during the 1980's, because a high percentage of its factories went bust, though it remains a thriving and developing town today, largely due to its closeness to the city of london, plus its exceptional rail and road communications.

The town stands adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
