The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in approximately the first century AD, and the settlement which grew up round the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the citizens of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were accordingly executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many alleged witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully hit quite a few times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the 1980's, when a lot of its industry went bust, even so it is still a successful and growing town today, mostly due to its proximity to the city of london, and the first rate road and rail connections.

The town is set just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
