Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 110,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the commune that grew up in the locality of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were consequently hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless assumed witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, making products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its industries shut down, though it remains a thriving and expanding town today, primarily due to its close proximity to the capital, plus the first rate road and rail links.
