Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, around thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has got a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in approximately the first century AD, and the commune that developed in the vicinity of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading instigators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a significant manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing such items as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industry led to its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was successfully struck many times.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline during the 1980's, simply because much of its industry closed, even so it still is a thriving and blooming town today, mostly due to its proximity to the capital, and its outstanding rail and road communications.

Chelmsford lies adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's some 16 miles drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
