The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from central London. The town has got a populace of approximately 111,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the commune which expanded in the area of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main agitators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town during the 19th century, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit many times.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its manufacturing plants ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, primarily due to the closeness to London, and its first rate road and rail links.

The town sits close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some sixteen miles from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
