Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a populace of some 110,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in around the first century AD, and the settlement which expanded around the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had become known by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the locals of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were thereafter executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th century saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless suspected witches.

Through the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, making such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its industry shut down, even so it still is a thriving and expanding town today, largely due to its nearness to the city of london, and its superb road and rail communications.

The town sits close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 26 km drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
