River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the village that developed round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were subsequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th century witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing such items as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its plants went bust, though it remains a successful and developing town today, for the most part because of its closeness to the capital, and its terrific road and rail connections.

The town is positioned close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's around 26 km from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
