An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the people of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading culprits were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing goods such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its industry shut down, though it remains a flourishing and booming town today, largely due to the nearness to the capital, and its terrific road and rail connections.
