The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of approximately thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of around 110,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in around the first century AD, and the commune which grew up around the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading instigators were ultimately hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, crafting products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit several times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, because much of its industry went bust, although it still is a flourishing and blooming town today, largely due to the closeness to London, plus the good road and rail communications.

The town stands just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's some 26 km car journey from Colchester and about 51 kms from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
