The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of roughly 110,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

A Saxon encampment followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it had become known by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the people of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many alleged witches.

Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing such goods as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its industry went bust, though it is still a successful and blooming town today, principally due to its closeness to the capital, and its superb road and rail connections.
