River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in around the first century AD, and the town that grew up in the vicinity of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by the year 1199 it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were consequently put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless supposed witches.

Through the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through substantial decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industry closed down, even so it is still a successful and expanding town today, largely due to its close proximity to London, plus its superb road and rail links.
