The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the Chelmer and Can rivers, about thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the encampment that developed round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main agitators were later hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th century, making goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the 1980's, when a lot of its industry closed, though it continues to be a successful and booming town today, predominantly due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus the exceptional road and rail communications.

The town can be found close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately twenty six kilometers from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
