Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, about 32 mls from central London. The town boasts a population of approximately 111,500 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the village which grew up surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading culprits were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a significant manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was hit a few times.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its manufacturing plants ceased to be profitable, all the same it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, mainly because of its nearness to the capital, and its outstanding road and rail links.

The town is situated close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly 26 km from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
