Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a drive of approximately 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the settlement which expanded in the area of the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had become known by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the people of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main culprits were accordingly hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless presumed witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into an important industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing such products as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline in the 1980's, as a good deal of its production facilities closed, even so it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, for the most part due to its close proximity to the capital, plus its good rail and road links.

Chelmsford lies adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 26 kilometers drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
