An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had become known by its current name of Chelmsford.

Through the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a major manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, crafting goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five yrs before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as much of its industry went bust, in spite of this it is still a successful and developing town today, mainly due to its closeness to the city of london, and the excellent road and rail connections.

The town is found just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is around twenty six km from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
