Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the settlement that expanded around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had become known by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the people of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main culprits were later put to death in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many supposed witches.

Throughout the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing goods such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its manufacturing facilities closed, even so it is still a thriving and booming town today, largely due to its closeness to the city of london, plus the superb rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is found adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about twenty six kilometres drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
