The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly thirty two mls from central London. The town boasts a population of some 111,000 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the town which expanded in the vicinity of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many alleged witches.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, because much of its manufacturing facilities shut down, all the same it continues to be a flourishing and booming town today, primarily due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus its superb rail and road communications.

The town sits near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is about twenty six km drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
