Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in roughly the 1st century AD, and the commune which developed in the locality of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, however by1189 being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless alleged witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing items such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline in the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry went bust, though it continues to be a flourishing and developing town today, primarily because of its close proximity to the city of london, and the superb road and rail communications.

The town stands close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's about sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
