River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the encampment which developed round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the locals of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main culprits were later executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous alleged witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a serious manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing such items as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was successfully struck many times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its industry shut down, though it is still a thriving and developing town today, largely because of its nearness to the capital, and the first rate rail and road connections.
