The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into an important industrial town in the 19th C, producing goods such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit a number of times.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.
