Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a drive of approximately 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in around the first century AD, and the settlement that grew up in the area of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main culprits were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many assumed witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a lot of its industry shut down, even so it is still a successful and blooming town today, mostly due to the close proximity to London, and the terrific rail and road communications.

The town stands adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
