The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has got a population of around 110,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the village which grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the locals of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main agitators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing items such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its industrial facilities closed, all the same it still is a successful and blooming town today, principally due to its nearness to London, plus the superb rail and road communications.

The town is located just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
