Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, around thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of some 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

A Saxon settlement followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the ringleaders were consequently put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless alleged witches.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was struck quite a few times.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.
