The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a car journey of roughly 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a populace of approximately 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the community that developed round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the people of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were subsequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important industrial town in the 19th C, making items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck several times.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its factories ceased to be profitable, though it remains a successful and expanding town today, for the most part due to the proximity to the city of london, and the excellent road and rail communications.

The town is positioned just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
