Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a populace of some 111,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the community that grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the citizens of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were later executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th century, making such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline during the 1980's, since a lot of its manufacturing facilities closed down, though it still is a flourishing and booming town today, principally due to its proximity to the city of london, and its terrific road and rail connections.

The town lies just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around twenty six kilometers drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
