Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has a population of approximately 111,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the community that developed round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was documented as Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading agitators were subsequently hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a serious manufacturing town during the 19th century, making such goods as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck several times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline in the 1980's, since a good deal of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, though it remains a thriving and growing town today, mainly due to its nearness to the city of london, plus its quality road and rail communications.

The town lies adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately 16 miles drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
