Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize.
