It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

A Saxon community came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main culprits were later executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such items as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline in the 1980's, as a lot of its industry closed, though it continues to be a successful and developing town today, principally due to the nearness to the capital, and the terrific rail and road communications.
