Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the community that grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading culprits were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless suspected witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a lot of its industries went bust, however it remains a flourishing and growing town today, largely due to its nearness to the city of london, and its first rate rail and road connections.

The town can be found near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some 26 kilometers drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
