River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in about the 1st century AD, and the village which grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the people of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading culprits were consequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many supposed witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a considerable industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its manufacturing plants closed down, though it still is a successful and blooming town today, mainly due to the closeness to the capital, plus its outstanding rail and road connections.
