The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly 45 years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline during the 1980's, simply because much of its industry closed down, even so it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, primarily due to the proximity to London, and its first rate rail and road links.
