An Anglo Saxon camp followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 it was being referred to by its present name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were later hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to an important industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its production facilities went bust, even so it still is a successful and expanding town today, largely due to its close proximity to London, plus the superb rail and road communications.
