Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, around 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in about the 1st century AD, and the settlement which expanded round the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main instigators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous assumed witches.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline during the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its production facilities went bust, even so it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, primarily because of its closeness to the capital, plus its exceptional road and rail connections.

The town stands adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
