The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has a populace of roughly 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in around the 1st century AD, and the encampment which expanded around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading instigators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many suspected witches.
