The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a drive of around 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the community that developed round the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community superseded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading agitators were subsequently put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous suspected witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the 19th C, crafting such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline during the 1980's, simply because much of its industry went bust, yet it continues to be a thriving and developing town today, primarily because of its proximity to London, and the excellent rail and road communications.

The town is set just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is about twenty six kilometers from Colchester and about 51 kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
