The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the commune which evolved around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main culprits were thereafter hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous supposed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing such items as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck several times.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the 1980's, as a good deal of its manufacturing plants went bust, though it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, for the most part because of its close proximity to London, and the terrific rail and road connections.

The town is located just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately twenty six km from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
