Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of some 111,500 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the first century AD, and the community which expanded round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading instigators were later put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its industry closed down, even so it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, mostly because of its proximity to the city of london, and the good road and rail communications.

Chelmsford can be found near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
