River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in around the 1st century AD, and the town that expanded round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were consequently put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous suspected witches.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five years before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline in the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its production facilities shut down, even so it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, principally because of its proximity to the city of london, and the superb road and rail communications.
