The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the community which grew up in the area of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main instigators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a major manufacturing town during the 19th century, crafting products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit several times.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its industries went bust, though it still is a flourishing and blooming town today, primarily due to the closeness to the capital, and the good rail and road links.

Chelmsford stands adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's some twenty six km drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
