Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the community which developed surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community superseded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was documented as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many assumed witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing in WW2, and it was struck a few times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five yrs before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into substantial decline in the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its production facilities shut down, though it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, predominantly because of its nearness to the city of london, and the superb rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is found adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately sixteen miles from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
