Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of around 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up in the locality of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 being called by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the citizens of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th century, producing items such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck a few times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline during the 1980's, simply because much of its industries ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, principally due to the closeness to the capital, and the outstanding rail and road connections.
