An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its manufacturers shut down, though it still is a thriving and growing town today, largely because of its proximity to the city of london, and its first class road and rail links.
