Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of around 111,500 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the 1st century AD, and the village which grew up in the locality of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its current name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the locals of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading instigators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing in WWII, and it was struck many times.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as much of its manufacturers went bust, though it remains a thriving and booming town today, predominantly because of its nearness to London, and the first class rail and road connections.

Chelmsford can be found adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 26 km car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
