The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its factories closed down, however it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, primarily due to the proximity to the city of london, plus its exceptional rail and road links.
