Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the community that grew up around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline during the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its industrial facilities shut down, though it remains a flourishing and booming town today, primarily due to the nearness to the city of london, and the outstanding rail and road communications.

The town can be found near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
