An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the residents of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main instigators were consequently executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, crafting such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered substantial decline in the 1980's, since much of its industries ceased to be profitable, however it continues to be a successful and booming town today, for the most part because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus the first class road and rail communications.
