Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of approximately 111,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later being called by its current name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were thereafter hung in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many alleged exponents of witchcraft.
