River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the 1st century AD, and the community that evolved around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it had become known by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main culprits were thereafter hung in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless presumed witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, making goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline during the 1980's, because a lot of its industry closed down, even so it is still a thriving and expanding town today, mostly due to the closeness to London, plus its quality road and rail communications.
