Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has got a populace of some 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the community that grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community followed the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were consequently put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous assumed witches.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a considerable industrial town in the 19th century, producing items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the 1980's, since a high percentage of its industry closed down, even so it still is a thriving and growing town today, principally because of its close proximity to the capital, and its good road and rail connections.

The town sits close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately twenty six km from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
