The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of around 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

A Saxon settlement superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its current identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the people of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main culprits were accordingly put to death in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.
