The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of roughly 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has got a populace of around 110,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading instigators were thereafter hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous supposed witches.
