Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, roughly 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of some 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in approximately the 1st century AD, and the village that grew up round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the inhabitants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were ultimately hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many presumed witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during WWII, and it was struck many times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline in the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, nevertheless it remains a successful and growing town today, mostly due to its close proximity to the city of london, and its superb road and rail connections.

The town is set beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 26 kilometers drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
