The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in about the 1st century AD, and the settlement that evolved surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the citizens of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were later put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless supposed witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five yrs before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its manufacturing plants closed, even so it remains a successful and growing town today, mainly due to its proximity to London, plus its quality rail and road communications.

The town can be found near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is about twenty six kilometres car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
