The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the 1980's, simply because much of its industry closed, nonetheless it is still a thriving and booming town today, predominantly due to its close proximity to the capital, and its outstanding rail and road communications.
