Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from central London. The town has got a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the encampment that evolved round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main agitators were accordingly executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a considerable manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline in the 1980's, since a lot of its plants closed, even so it remains a successful and booming town today, principally because of its close proximity to London, and the quality rail and road links.
