Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the village that expanded in the locality of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was documented as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was hit a few times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline during the 1980's, because much of its industry shut down, though it still is a thriving and expanding town today, predominantly because of its closeness to the capital, plus its superb rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is situated adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly 26 kilometres drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
