An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the occupants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading agitators were later hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many alleged witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a vital industrial town in the 19th century, making goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as much of its industry went bust, even so it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, mostly due to the proximity to the city of london, and its quality rail and road connections.

The town sits beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 16 mls from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
