Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of about 110,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the people of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main culprits were thereafter hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many alleged witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit many times.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five yrs before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its manufacturing plants went bust, even so it is still a successful and blooming town today, for the most part due to the proximity to London, plus the good rail and road connections.

The town is set beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
