The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately 32 miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the people of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a serious manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing such goods as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, when much of its manufacturers closed, though it remains a successful and expanding town today, predominantly due to its closeness to London, plus its first class rail and road communications.
