River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the encampment which evolved surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the people of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the ringleaders were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a considerable manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing such goods as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its industry closed, yet it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, primarily due to its closeness to the city of london, and its superb road and rail communications.
