Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.
