The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, about 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has got a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the settlement that grew up around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the ringleaders were later hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a serious manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was successfully struck several times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because much of its industries shut down, even so it remains a thriving and developing town today, largely because of its closeness to the capital, and its good rail and road communications.

Chelmsford can be found adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's around sixteen miles from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
