The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of some 111,500 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in approximately the 1st century AD, and the encampment that developed around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main culprits were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its industrial facilities closed, even so it is still a thriving and developing town today, principally because of its proximity to the city of london, and the good rail and road communications.
