Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the city of London. The town boasts a populace of around 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in about the first century AD, and the community that developed around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless presumed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was struck several times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline in the 1980's, as a lot of its industry went bust, even so it continues to be a flourishing and developing town today, mostly due to the closeness to the city of london, plus its first class road and rail communications.

The town is situated adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is around sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from central London.
