The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the town that grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community came after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were consequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, crafting items such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in WWII, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered considerable decline in the 1980's, since much of its industrial facilities went bust, yet it is still a successful and expanding town today, mostly due to the nearness to the city of london, and the good rail and road communications.

The town can be found just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
