It is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

A Saxon community succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the citizens of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were later hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing in WW2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into significant decline in the nineteen-eighties, when much of its plants closed down, although it still is a successful and booming town today, mostly because of its close proximity to the capital, plus the superb road and rail links.
