River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the encampment that grew up around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the residents of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main agitators were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town during the nineteenth century, making items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was struck quite a few times.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline during the 1980's, since a high percentage of its plants went bust, though it remains a flourishing and booming town today, predominantly due to its closeness to the capital, plus the first class road and rail connections.
