The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of some 110,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in approximately the first century AD, and the encampment that grew up in the area of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many assumed witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit quite a few times.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into considerable decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, though it remains a flourishing and growing town today, primarily because of its closeness to the capital, and its good rail and road links.

Chelmsford lies adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around twenty six km drive from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
