An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading agitators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many suspected witches.

Throughout the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, crafting products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as much of its industries closed, though it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, mostly due to its proximity to the capital, plus its superb rail and road communications.

The town lies just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately twenty six kilometres car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
