Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has got a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in about the 1st century AD, and the town which grew up in the locality of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the citizens of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were thereafter executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous suspected witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a significant manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing such products as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully struck several times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into substantial decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a lot of its industry shut down, in spite of this it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, predominantly due to its nearness to the capital, plus the good rail and road links.

Chelmsford is found adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly 16 mls drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
