Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in roughly the first century AD, and the community that grew up around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community superseded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the occupants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main culprits were ultimately put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous assumed witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing products such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the 1980's, simply because much of its industry closed, yet it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, for the most part because of its proximity to the capital, and the quality road and rail connections.
