Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the community that grew up in the vicinity of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the people of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing such products as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through considerable decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its production facilities closed down, in spite of this it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, primarily due to the proximity to the city of london, plus the excellent road and rail communications.

The town is set near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's about twenty six kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London.
