The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of approximately 111,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in roughly the first century AD, and the village which evolved in the locality of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main instigators were later hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing in WW2, and it was successfully struck many times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, largely due to its nearness to the capital, plus its outstanding road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is set just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately twenty six kilometres drive from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
