The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has got a populace of around 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the town that expanded round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the citizens of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main instigators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous supposed witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing in WW2, and it was struck several times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its production facilities went bust, in spite of this it is still a thriving and growing town today, primarily because of its nearness to the city of london, plus its good road and rail links.

The town is positioned near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
