Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of roughly thirty two mls from central London. The town has a populace of some 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the town that grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had taken on its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its industry closed, however it remains a thriving and developing town today, for the most part because of its close proximity to the capital, and its excellent rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is set near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
