The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a populace of about 110,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in around the 1st century AD, and the settlement that evolved surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the locals of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless presumed witches.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was hit several times.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline during the nineteen-eighties, since much of its production facilities went bust, even so it remains a successful and blooming town today, for the most part due to the nearness to the capital, and its excellent rail and road communications.
