The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, about 32 miles from central London. The town boasts a population of about 111,500 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the commune which grew up in the area of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous presumed witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a thriving and growing town today, predominantly due to the nearness to the city of london, and its quality road and rail communications.

The town is set near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
