Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in around the first century AD, and the encampment that evolved round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 being called by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading instigators were thereafter put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous alleged witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit many times.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its industry closed down, however it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, mainly due to its nearness to the city of london, plus the first rate rail and road connections.
