Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately 32 mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a populace of some 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in around the first century AD, and the village that evolved round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had become known by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the people of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many presumed witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was struck a few times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline in the 1980's, since a high percentage of its manufacturers ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a flourishing and growing town today, mainly due to the proximity to London, plus the quality rail and road links.

The town can be found adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 16 miles drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
