River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading agitators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing during WWII, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through considerable decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its plants shut down, though it continues to be a successful and developing town today, mostly due to the proximity to the capital, and its outstanding road and rail communications.

The town is positioned near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's some 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
