The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Can and Chelmer, a drive of around thirty two miles from central London. The town boasts a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the commune which grew up in the area of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment superseded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main agitators were subsequently hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a significant manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing in WWII, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, though it still is a thriving and expanding town today, principally due to the close proximity to London, plus its superb road and rail links.

The town can be found beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some twenty six km from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
