River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in around the first century AD, and the community which developed surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the residents of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were subsequently executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck several times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the 1980's, because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a thriving and developing town today, mostly because of its proximity to the capital, and the outstanding road and rail communications.
