The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the commune which grew up surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later being called by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th C, crafting such items as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industry closed, nonetheless it still is a successful and growing town today, mostly due to its nearness to London, and its outstanding road and rail communications.
