The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of about 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in roughly the first century AD, and the village which developed around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp came after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were consequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless supposed witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into significant decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities went bust, though it still is a successful and expanding town today, for the most part due to the nearness to the capital, plus its first rate road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is situated adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's some twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
