Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, approximately 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of around 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the town which grew up in the area of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the locals of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main agitators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous supposed witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing goods such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its industry closed, even so it is still a flourishing and booming town today, principally because of its close proximity to the capital, plus its outstanding rail and road communications.
