River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the settlement that grew up round the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main instigators were ultimately put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous assumed witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing goods such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck several times.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline in the 1980's, since a high percentage of its manufacturers closed, though it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, mostly due to the proximity to the capital, and the excellent rail and road links.

The town can be found adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about twenty six kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
